SEIU Endorses David Morales for Mayor of Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI – Rhode Island SEIU State Council has endorsed Rep. David Morales for Mayor of Providence. The group cited Morales’s track record of standing with workers and delivering legislative results as key reasons for their endorsement, alongside his commitment to focusing on housing affordability as the next Mayor of Providence.

“David Morales has never wavered in his support of working people and our members,” said SEIU State Council President Jesse Martin. “When workers at Butler Hospital went on strike last year to demand livable wages and safer working conditions, David was there with us on the picket lines. In the legislature, David has delivered real results for working people across our state. He’s worked to raise the minimum wage, increase funding for hospitals, and expand healthcare coverage for all of Rhode Island’s children. Now, as a candidate for mayor, David has made passing rent stabilization and making Providence a city that working people can afford to stay in central to his campaign. We are proud to endorse his campaign and excited to stand alongside him as we work to build a city all our neighbors can afford and where every worker is treated with respect and dignity.”

“I am honored to be endorsed by the SEIU State Council,” said Rep. Morales. “Representing thousands of workers, SEIU has been on the front lines fighting for the respect, dignity, and wages our workers deserve. Last year, I was proud to stand alongside members at Butler Hospital during their historic three month strike. That strike led to meaningful raises and safer working conditions for workers across every department. Time and time again, SEIU has shown the power of workers standing together in solidarity. For too long, working people have been shut out of the rooms where decisions get made while our city government sits on the sidelines. That time is ending. When I’m mayor, City Hall will serve the interests of the working people who serve our neighbors and help our city thrive. I will continue to stand with all workers, from our sanitation workers to healthcare professionals to case managers. That’s how we build a Providence for All.”
