Providence Teachers Union backs challenger Morales over incumbent Mayor Smiley

The endorsement comes at a pivotal moment for the city’s schools

Providence is getting its schools back, but the teachers want a new mayor.

The Providence Teachers Union announced Monday its members “overwhelmingly agreed” to endorse state Representative David Morales over incumbent Mayor Brett Smiley ahead of September’s Democratic primary.

“Rep. Morales has consistently shown up for students, families, and educators in Providence,” incoming Providence Teachers Union President Lindsay Paiva said in a statement. “His deep respect for organized labor, commitment to staffing that prioritizes student and educator well-being, and interest in amplifying teacher voice make him a promising partner in this next chapter for PTU and for our district.”
